Poppyhead is directed by Liz Ackerley, a chartered landscape architect and qualified garden designer with a number of years experience designing and managing landscapes from tiny courtyards to large private and public spaces. In the late 90s Liz trained first at Capel Manor, Middlesex University, where she was best garden design student of the year, and then at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design where she obtained a post graduate diploma in Landscape Architecture with commendation before obtaining Chartership status. Liz has held positions in several design consultancy and landscape architecture practices and has also taught garden design on courses in both London and Staffordshire.
Throughout her career Liz has been particularly interested in the relationships between gardens and the natural environment and creating a ‘sense of place’ within a specific landscape situation. She has an affinity for and interest in Japanese aesthetics and the ways in which all things within a design are related and have a purpose. She is particularly taken with the notion of working with few components and making them work very effectively together through a single theme or idea that guides the aesthetic choices. It is this absolute simplicity and elegance coupled with understanding and illustrating of natural processes that Liz seeks to emulate in her designs. The name Poppyhead is a metaphor for this combination of absolute simplicity in the architectural form of the seedhead and illustration of natural biological processes involved in seed dispersal.
Liz loves to work with clients who share her aspiration for stunning contemporary outside spaces that stimulate the senses as well as calming the mind, a kind of ‘soft minimalism’. Through her focus upon a minimalist aesthetic and strong attention to detail, coupled with careful interpretation of the client’s brief and the context of the place, Liz is able to deliver inspired gardens for discerning clients.
We work with private clients, developers, architects and other consultants and contractors to deliver gardens from initial consultation to completion of works on site and advice on ongoing management.
We offer a personal and professional service for all our clients whether for a small urban courtyard or large rural retreat. The start point for any garden design is a discussion about the project. Please contact us to talk through your requirements at an initial consultation.
"Working with Liz was a fantastic experience filled with quality. We will certainly work with Liz again in the not-so-distant future."
